But it is also time to decide if some perennials, trees and shrubs need to be divided, transplanted or new plants installed. Fall is a good time for this as it can encourage healthy root growth over the winter, but on the coast, be sure to stake new plants that might not hold up against the winter rain and wind. October tips mentions that you can use newspaper or cardboard covered by mulch to discourage winter and spring annual weeds or remove a lawn area for conversion to garden beds. It’s never to early to start preparing for next year’s maintenance or expansion.
