July and August are all about hot summer days. It’s a good time to learn about effective, efficient watering practices. For example, reduce evaporation by watering vegetable and flower gardens in the early morning. Water deeply and infrequently to encourage root growth. Mulch also helps reduce evaporation.

Summer is also a time for plant pests and diseases. In late July, begin to monitor for blight on tomatoes. Correct by pruning for air circulation, picking off affected leaves, and/or treating with approved fungicide. Fruit trees and garden ornamentals are items to also check regularly for pests. OSU has extensive information on pest/disease identification and control; the links below are a good starting reference point.

Last, hot days are an ideal time to plan for late summer and fall planting!

These links contain helpful tips for summer gardening, pest monitoring and management, and timing for many plantings.
