The American Society of Health-System Pharmacists Clinical Skills Competition (ASHP CSC) is an annual competition that occurs at the beginning of the school year. The CSC is comprised of a 2-hour written assessment followed by oral presentations. Despite concurrent events held at the beginning of the school year, the CSC had a great turnout due to early promotional efforts by our student leadership. A total of 14 teams representing both the Corvallis and Portland campuses participated in the CSC: one P1 team, six P2 teams, three P3 teams, and four P4 teams.
The written portion of the CSC was held on October 2nd and the oral presentations were held on October 7th. For the first part of the competition, pairs of students from the same class were presented with a patient case and asked to write a pharmacist care plan within a time limit of two hours.
Following the written competition, the top teams from each class were:
P1 Team: Phillip Rothschild and Kelly Kovl
P2 Team: Jennifer Rubinstein and Thi Nguyen
P3 Team: Courtney Strouse and Ryan Moore
P4 Team: Alexandra Stoner and Mac Ovenell
Each of these teams was presented with a 10 dollar gift certificate.
The top 5 teams from the written portion advanced to the second round of the competition. The teams presented their written pharmacist care plan to a panel of eight pharmacist judges. The top 5 teams included four P4 teams and one P3 team, proving this year’s competition to be an especially hard case for newcomers.
The final results after the oral presentation round were:
5th Place: P3 team Ryan Moore and Courtney Strouse
4th Place: P4 team Cassandra R. Dotson and Keri Crumby
3rd Place: P4 team Allison Gille and Lincoln Alexander
2nd Place: P4 team Alexandra Stoner and Mac Ovenell
and winning by just one point…
1st Place: P4 team Brandy Wimer and Amanda Masog.
As winners of our local ASHP CSC, Brandy and Amanda received complimentary registration to attend the 49th ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting and Exhibition in Anaheim, CA where they competed in the national clinical skills competition on December 6-7. Many thanks to all participants, student organizers, and judges. Congratulations to all of our top teams!
