FAQs

These have been compiled based on inquiries we received during the 2023 program. Feel free to email Dr. Emily Eidam (emily.eidam @ oregonstate.edu) or Dr. Laurie Juranek (laurie.juranek @ oregonstate.edu) for more information.

Question: how long is the cruise and what are the start/end dates?

These are both TBD, but we anticipate that the transit will take place in early August. When deciding whether to apply, please consider if your schedule is flexible between late July and late August (to accommodate travel, a pre-cruise workshop, and the cruise itself).

Question: are there any activities in which I need to participate before the cruise?

We anticipate having several pre-cruise meetings held virtually over Zoom (somewhere between 3 and 5 meetings). We will poll people for their availability. Participants may also need to provide information in advance of the trip concerning items being transported, desired station details, etc.

Question: is this program open to graduate students?

The goal of this cruise is to provide training and networking opportunities to early career researchers who are actively applying for U.S. federal research grants involving oceanographic vessels for work in the Arctic – or will soon be applying for such grants. We will consider grad student applications. Please note in your application whether you have existing seagoing experience and specific research goals in the Arctic.

Question: is this program open to international participants?

Because of the anticipated funding for this program, we are able to support current U.S. citizens, as well as U.S. residents employed at a domestic institution, who are eligible to apply for U.S. federal research grants (or will soon be eligible).

Question: do I need a passport to participate? What if my passport is about to expire?

Participants must have a current, valid passport that will not expire before February 2025.

Question: I’m interested in the program unsure of the logistics of taking a few weeks off work. Do you have any advice?

Based on anticipated funding, we expect to have some support to offset hardships on a case-by-case basis (for example, a small stipend to support a faculty buyout or to offset missed postdoc salary). Please contact us to discuss options if you have such a need.

Question: what types of sampling will be done?

We anticipate collecting diverse data including CTD profiles, water samples, bathymetric data, and likely many other measurements. These details will evolve as cruise plans are made and finalized and details of the cruise track and dates are solidified.

Question: can I bring my own sampling equipment to collect measurements for my own research?

One of our main program goals is to conduct interesting research with participants along the cruise track. Some constraints exist in terms of types of sampling, and we will discuss these during pre-cruise planning meetings. Feel free to reach out to us if you have specific questions.
