Experiences with Discrimination

If a company was faced with a public lawsuit regarding accusations about widespread discrimination, it would 100% change the way I feel about them. As a biracial woman, the world’s odds are already stacked against me. In addition, I myself have fallen victim to discrimination based upon my ethnicity and gender before. I know how hurtful it is to feel like you are not as valued or wanted in the workplace, in school, or any type of organization as someone else based upon factors by which I cannot control.

Within the past year, anti-racism movements, in particular, have gained awareness. It has now become extremely common for companies to make a statement about where they stand. In some ways, I feel like this public stance has become a standard. I have noticed that if I realize an organization has taken a public stance against Black Lives Matter, Asian Hate, Title IX, etc., I am more inclined to continue either being apart of that organization or keep buying from them. If I notice that a company has not made a statement, especially if they already have accusations against them, I am more inclined to steer away. This is because I believe that the way a company values human beings through its employees’ actions, policies, and practices truly reveals their company’s core values and priorities. I want to make sure that I am only participating in companies and organizations that align with my values.

However, I do recognize that a few, select individuals can ruin a company’s reputation when it comes to discrimination, and their actions do not truly reflect those of the overarching organization. Although the larger organization may not be responsible for an individual member’s discriminatory actions, I believe they are still accountable for it.
