Week 10- What I’ve learnt

The most important thing I have learnt in this class is the implications for job seekers. This topic stood out to me as it was a topic that seems very relevant to me right now as a soon to be graduate in a foreign country looking for a job. The knowledge of this topic is something that everyone searching for a job should know and consider.

The first implication is “understanding the changing world we live in” to stay on top of this applicants need to take advantage of the current skills shortage. They will also need to stay on top of the changes in technology. With these two in mind knowing that the service industry will continue to dominate the workplace in the future. This last point could be a really important point for high schoolers, current and recently graduated college students about how they can prepare for their professional careers.

The second implication is “know your rights” these include knowing what discrimination is and that you more than likely face it at some point in life no matter who you are. Though a difficult topic to navigate it also explains that candidates do not have to answer questions in interviews that are not job-related.

Implication three is “read the job description”. Being able to utilise this as a “cheat sheet” about what the employers are looking for and what will be expected of you. Using this information and implementing it into your resume is vital.

Implication four, “do not be a passive applicant during recruitment”. This point covers cultivating your own brand, actively seeking out organisations and building and maintaining a healthy network.

“Learning to communicate your value” is implication 5, this directly correlated to the language you use to describe your value and how this reflects on their bottom line.

Implication 6 is about knowing what tests are asking from you and how you can best take them to show your positive characteristics. This can be done by knowing who you are and what you bring to the table.

“Learn how to beat the test and ace the assessment” is implication seven. This is done by understanding the weaknesses of the assessments and being yourself within reason.

Implication eight is “learn to negotiate”. Research is key. Practising negotiating is the best start.

Finally is implication nine “cultivate your career”. This includes answering these questions. What am I good at? What do I value? How did I get here? Where am I going?
