During this week, our team is designing UI for our website. Strictly speaking, we are not doing UI “design”. Our goal for this and next week is basically trying to learn and get familiar with the flask framework and try to put most of the content we need for the UI on each page. I start to think about what kind of UI design is attractive to most of the users?
Here are my thoughts on what makes a good UI design. Firstly, be clear enough. Basic icons should be familiar to most of the users and are better be consistent with other websites. I still remember one time I was browsing a new shopping website, all the icons are cute animal shapes, It was very cute and attractive. However, I was not able to distinguish the difference and the meaning of the icons. I tried three to four different icons until I got the shopping cart I was trying to get. I think if a website wants to use unique icons, it’s better also to add the word on it for user to understand.
Second, be concise. the main color on the web is better to be less than three. If too much color on it, it might make users confused and hard to get the important information. I almost browse Youtube every day and check out some useful or interesting videos, I noticed that Youtube mainly just uses red color. It’s very concise and easy to get the information I want.
Last but not least, ask for feedback. As a developer or UI designer, It’s important to get feedback from others and consider the suggestions. The designer team could always find an interviewee with different ages and backgrounds and get feedback from them. I believe the UI design for users and users’ feelings is the most important thing.
Looking forward to working with the team and making a satisfying UI design for the following weeks.
