Compensation effecting Job Decisions

A couple years ago, it was winter term and I was sitting on my couch trying to figure out what I was going to do for the upcoming summer. Was I going to try and find an internship? Or was I going to go back to the same lifeguarding job I have had for years prior. Well, a phone call later with my boss made the decision more clear.

At first, I really didn’t want to go back to working at the same pool. With how things had been operating lately, I felt like I would need to pick up a huge responsibility to keep things orderly as I would be the most experienced guard working there. But my boss had made an offer that I could not pass up.

Instead of being labled as a regular guard, she had offered that I take the role Asssitant Manager. With this new title, it would include more respnosiblites, but that would be recognized with an increase in pay. At first her offer was not as high as I was hoping, but knowing how valuable I would be to her, I counter offered a higher hourly wage. She gladly exepeted and even threw in some more benoifts such as overtime pay for large events and flexible sceduling.

The compensation had most definitely motivated me to take on the role because my efforts and work were going to be rightfully acknowledged through what I was earning. I felt like it was a perfect balance between work and reward.
