The Challenges and Obstacles of Job Descriptions

Writing Job Descriptions that Attract Top Talent - Hourly, Inc.

Prior to this weeks learning materials, I was unaware of the extent that job descriptions can play within the overall success of various departments and companies. I viewed these descriptions as short explanations of job duties, roles, and criteria. However, after learning more, I know understand these descriptions are crucial in setting clear expectations, guiding high performance rates, and ensuring unity across the company and its employees.

One of the key challenges that I can see with job descriptions may be how quickly the market and qualifications are evolving, with the physical written descriptions not keeping up. This can often times lead to misunderstandings between candidates and companies, and hinder these relationships immensely. A job analysis will list the key tasks and KSAOs to describe the essential characteristics and components that the employee must be able to carry out and perform (Job Analysis and Job Design, pg. 1). However, often times, these descriptions may be outdated and cannot keep up with the fast paced, changing expectations of the workplace.

Although there is a strong risk when including detailed job descriptions, there also runs a huge risk of not including one at all. This can create confusion about responsibilities and expectations of employees, as they were not informed of the KSAOs early on. Viewing this absence from an HR standpoint, can increase legal issues and compliance affairs.

Overall, including these job descriptions and analysis are a crucial component in ensuring the success and smooth transition of onboarding new employees. However, this process needs to be done in detail and with great concern of all existing components. Keeping these descriptions is crucial in staying up to date with the ever changing expectations of the job market and positions.
