A few years ago I was working in construction in a field that was considered rather unpleasant as a result of noise and physical strain. In the company I worked for it was a relatively known fact most people worked in a particular field there because the monetary compensation for work was very good. Honestly, I think that the situation at that company was really great because it gave people with no training or education a chance to make real money that really couldn’t otherwise be earned without formal training. For the most part, everyone was very happy to be making so much money so things typically went smoothly. However, occasionally some people would become tired of the very involved, difficult, and uncomfortable work. When this would occur people would often complain about how they wanted to have a “real job” or a “normal job.” Some people would go away to a “normal job” but then return because they wanted to make more money again. All in all, it was not a bad thing at all that people really wanted to make money or that the job paid so well. The issue was just that some people were only there for the comfortable pay and it would make them substantially less happy at work. I think that when people really want to be doing the work that they are doing and care less about compensation they are typically more willing to face adversity in order to get the job. I think that just like anything there are several pieces to the puzzle when it comes to job satisfaction. I think that compensation is a crucial role but it shouldn’t be the only thing keeping an employee within a company or industry.
