Effective and Ineffective Interviews

Looking back at different interviews i have participated in i have had really good ones and poor ones. I would say that the best interviews i have been apart of are about real experiences and not just get to know you questions. A situation where i have experienced this is at my current role at Topgolf, the hiring process isn’t a one on one interview but an interactive experience with lots of hands on components. There were also good one on one questions like “Tell me about a time where you had to lead a team under pressure”. I would say that the structure of the interview was very equal and fair across the board which is how it should be. I especially just liked how the questions and activities were directly linked to what i would be doing day to day.

On the other hand, one of my least effective interviews was for a retail position at a small store. The person who was interviewing me made small talk mainly and wasn’t really asking about my skills more my day to day standing. I didn’t feel good about the interview after. I think that interviews structured like this can waste peoples time and lead to not hiring the right candidate.

I would say that the company should have more structured interviews with more job related and skill related questions that have a set scale to look at to know where people stand when interviewing. I think that also have a hiring team versus one person would significantly help them from only having one brand of person working there. Training would also need to be more extensive and improve their hiring process.
