Fall Weed Control

Fall is a good time to control many weeds. Here are several that are good candidates for treatment in the fall.

Note: there are other herbicides and timings that are effective against these weeds. I’ve just listed those with fall applications. Restricted-use pesticides are not included.

PLEASE read and follow the label. Also, make sure your application site is listed on the label!

Weeds

Himalayan blackberry. Glyphosate. Apply in September to October when canes are actively growing and after berries are formed. Fall treatments must be made before a killing frost. See PNW Handbook for more information.

Field bindweed. Dicamba or dicamba + 2,4-D. Apply in late summer of fall before killing frost. See PNW Handbook for more information.

Scotch broom. Triclopyr or triclopyr + 2,4-D. Basal bark applications can be made any time of the year. See PNW Handbook for more information.

Queen Anne’s Lace (wild carrot). Picloram (Tordon). Apply to new rosettes in the fall. See PNW Handbook for more information.

Gorse. Triclopyr or triclopyr + 2,4-D. Basal bark applications can be made any time of the year. See PNW Handbook for more Information. The Gorse Action Group website is another excellent resource.

English holly. Glyphosate, imazapyr,or triclopyr can be used in the fall. See PNW Handbook for more information.

Wild iris. Glyphosate or imazapyr can be used in the fall. See PNW Handbook for more information.

Ivy. Triclopyr or glyphosate, depending on application method (cut stem vs foliar). There are also mechanical and manual control options. See PNW Handbook for more information. Also see

Tansy ragwort. 2,4-D or dicamba (Banvel, Rifle, or Clarity) or 2,4-D + dicamba (Weedmaster) or triclopyr + 2,4-D (Crossbow). Fall applications after rains begin seed germination have proven effective. See PNW Handbook for more information.

Teasel. 2,4-D amine or 2,4-D + dicamba (Banvel, Rifle, or Clarity). Apply to rosette stage in fall. See PNW Handbook for more information.

Canada thistle. Aminopyralid (Milestone) or chlorsulfuron (Telar) or glyphosate. See PNW Handbook for more information.

Bull thistle, milk thistle. 2,4-D, or aminopyralid (Milestone). Apply in fall to seedlings or rosettes. See PNW Handbook for more information.
