For my senior project, I decided to choose the All The Farms + Shopify project. The main reason I chose this project was being able to work with Shopify since I have heard many great things about working there. Another one was being a business minor, it is interesting and beneficial to work in e-commerce. The main goal of our project will be to create a custom Shopify theme that will be used by All The Farms. All The Farms is an online database of small local farms and ranches around the United States. All The Farm gives a way for these farms to sell directly to consumers while letting people help support their local farms. The agriculture industry is a complex thing that is tilted to benefit the large farms; All The Farms helps small farms and ranches by giving them another way to make sales. The goal of the custom theme is to allow these farms listed on All The Farms the ability to easily and quickly set up an online store. The custom Shopify theme would have static content that stays the same while replacing the dynamic content with the content of the unique farm. The template language that we will be using to do this is called Liquid. It was created by Shopify and used by them so it’s only right that we would do the same. Another part of the project will be a data importer. this importer will take all the existing data that is found on All the Farms and automatically import it into our custom Shopify theme so that we will not have to do it manually and it allows the farms a preview of what their website would look like.
After I was able to meet with our project manager, I became excited about being able to work on the project. The idea is something that I believe in because it just makes sense, almost like why didn’t I think of that. The ability to help local farms and ranches is also great since it promotes healthier eating as well as more quality food in different communities. It also allows for relationships with the person that supplies your food so people can be more aware of the impact food has on the ecosystem. I look forward to this challenge and can not wait to see what our team will do.
