The most important thing in terms of my career development that I have learned in this class are from week four’s lecture, and that is recruitment goals and methodology. While my initial job post graduation is entering into a company’s management training program, my end goal is to one day work at the regional offices as a recruiter. With that being said, learning about recruitment and the goal of recruiting employees was extremely important to me.
The primary goal of recruitment is to “generate the largest pool of qualified applicants possible.” This does not mean the highest number of applications, however. Successful recruitment of top talent includes both quantity and quality. With quantity means there are more options to choose from, but quality comes with higher expectations. If those expectations are not met, it can be very difficult to attract and retain the most qualified and attractive candidates. Another factor of success in terms of recruitment is targeted recruitment. Discriminaiton in any form is looked down upon, and recruiting is no exception. Targeted recruitment is an anti-discrimination strategy where organizations target recruitment ads and outlets where members of traditionally underrepresented groups are most likely to see them. This is the most effective method for combating hiring dicriminaton. It is up to hiring managers of an organization to add diversity into the organization and appropriate recruiting techniques is how that is done.
In terms of recruitment methodology, there are a few that this course really touches on. The three that stood out to me most were internet methods, point of purchase methods and employee referrals. Internet methods are becoming much more common due to the shift in technology. However, this can also correlate to an increase in quantity which is not always a good thing because it typically is associated with a decrease in quality. Point of purchase is based on where recruitment ads are placed in relation to where customers are most likely to see them. Lastly, employee referrals which are the most effective and common form of recruitment methods. Due to my new found knowledge of recruiting, I can confidently say that I am ready for my future career as a recruiter.
