This class, I feel, has been the most relevant to what we will see in the workplace. I don’t know if it was my favorite thing to learn but something that I did fine important was the Levels of Performance lecture as well as the discussion of job interviews and discussing elites. I think this resonated with me because of how shocking it was, but also how accurate it is. When I took a moment to look outside of my bubble I realized that certain people, in certain fields, will always have an advantage just because of the school and life they were raised in.
Another part that I thought was the most interesting was the talk about personality tests and how they use them when analyzing potential applicants. This was very interesting to me because I had to take one of these tests when applying for a job last spring. The test was similar to the one that we took in class a few weeks back. One thing about this test is that the companies that use them, use them to the max. As in this is how they evaluate you as a candidate and if you don’t meet the minimum requirements your out.
My only thought about this process and using personality and cognitive ability tests is that they are almost too spot on with evaluation of candidates. From my experience, the personality tests can narrow down exactly what a company needs for a candidate. The companies that I’ve seen using these are ones that are well established and know exactly the type of candidate that they need. Using a personality test will get them the exact result. I can see why a company would want to use these. It cuts out a lot of candidates that will ultimately be less successful and brings forward the ones that have been proven over time to stand out. For instance, a person who’s well suited for a high pressure sales role could be selected by personality tests and analyzed further without the company having to go with their gut.
