Race and Ethnic Relations
2018

In this Oregon State University upper division
Sociology course we explored the historic and social grounds
that have given rise to the power relations in the United
States. Once students could understand that “race”, ethnicity,
class and “gender” issues are simultaneous and intersecting
systems, then they were better able to see the different ways
in which other categories of experience intersect in everyday
society. The other categories include: age, religion, sexual
orientation, physical ability, accent, physical appearance,
and place of birth.

As part of the
final course assignment, students were required to first
produce a poster that outlined their ideas for a final YouTube
video project that reflected their learning about systems of
power. The students worked on building a YouTube video that
visually conveyed race
and ethnic relations in the United States. The final YouTube
videos provide lessons on race and ethnic relations, gender,
sexuality, and class issues.
