New Challenges

For anyone reading my blog, you have heard about how I went from studying Biology to Computer Science and now looking to get into the field of AR/VR. Recently, I have become part of a AR project, which will be my capstone assignment for the last quarter of my major. The project’s aim is to create a AR storybook application that enhances or you could say augments a user’s experience with a their favorite storybook. The application’s aim is to create a visual experience where when scanning the cover of a user’s storybook, pop-up images/models will render in accordance with the specific story.

Yesterday was actually my first meeting with the team of this project, and I realized there were several things I needed to learn to even start on an application like this. After discussing with my team members on what languages and software we would use, we finally decided on Unity and the Vuforia SDK. I was daunted at first with the task of having to learn software which I had absolutely no experience in I’ll admit. However, after thinking about it more I saw it as an opportunity to grow and learn more about the field I wanted to get into. After all when one works in the software development industry there will be occurrences where the company one works will change/update the languages used and require its members to adapt to these changes. Furthermore, learning Unity and Vuforia through this project would give me fundamental experiences in developing AR applications.

I am anxious, but excited for this new opportunity presented by this project. I know there will be a lot of hiccups along the way when participating in this project and trying to learn new software, but it will be a refreshing and challenging experience which I welcome. Who knows, perhaps after this project I’ll go on to making more AR applications of my choosing and maybe delve into the realm of VR development.
