Meet The Team

Our senior design team is made up of three very motivated, yet unique students. Each one of us offers a different set of skills, knowledge, and experience, which has been put to great use in this senior design. All three of us are graduating seniors in the College of Nuclear Science and Engineering here at Oregon State University, and will be going our separate ways upon graduating.

ANS National Student Conference, April 2023

Tanner Heatherly

Tanner Heatherly is graduating with a B.S. in Nuclear Engineering. He has academic exposure to research, nuclear physics, neutronics, fluid dynamics, and heat transfer. In addition to his academics, Tanner works for the Los Alamos National Laboratory where he performs neutron noise analysis on subcritical systems to infer neutron multiplication. He is fluent in MCNP 6.2/6.3 and PYTHON, and uses both systems to simulate the systems above. Tanner is also the Vice President of the Oregon State American Nuclear Society, in which he exhibits leadership, event planning, organization, and communication. He will be continuing his education at Oregon State University pursuing a M.S. in Nuclear Engineering.

Helen Howery

Helen Howery is graduating with a B.S. in Nuclear Engineering. She has academic exposure to nuclear physics, neutronics, fluid dynamics, and heat transfer with some coding experience. As a Midshipman in Navy ROTC, Helen has four years of experience in leadership, organization, time management, and professional presentations. She is currently the second highest ranking member of NROTC with the esteemed title of Executive Officer of the Beaver Battalion. Due to her skills and intelligence in nuclear engineering, Helen was selected to serve as an Officer in the Submarine Warfare community upon graduation. NOTE: As of 2019, only 84 women were serving as officers on US Navy Submarines.

Weslee Kersey

Weslee Kersey is graduating with a B.S. in Radiation Health Physics, with a minor in Organizational Leadership. He has academic exposure to nuclear physics, radiation protection, radiation biology, Leadership, and project management. In addition to his academics, Weslee is a Sergeant in the Army Reserves as a Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear Specialist, a Teaching Assistant for Project Management, and an Undergraduate Learning Assistant at Oregon State University. After graduation, Weslee will be continuing his education at the University of Florida pursuing his PhD in Nuclear engineering, with a focus in Nuclear Security, Forensics, and Nonproliferation.
