A Good Interview can change the way you think!

Interviews aren’t just an opportunity for you to prove yourself to a company for a position you feel you fit. You are also having the company provide their reasoning for why they deserve to have you working for it. You cannot let these interviews feel one-sided. These people need to believe you are a good fit, and you must prove to them why, but at the same time, they must prove to you why they are someone you want to risk your future on. In my experiences, the job interviews that I felt were not the most successful on my end, but gave me great things to remember for my next interview, revolved around uncharacteristic methods. They didn’t ask the usual questions you would expect; it was surrounded by figuring out who you are deep down. Getting below the surface levels, questions, really getting to understand how the person figures out how they react, what drives them, and how they operate morally. I think these interviews relied more on asking the hard-hitting questions and believing that the interviewers had a good understanding or gut feeling when they knew a person was a good fit for the position. In a sense of utility, the interviewer had to weigh the answers of the interviewee and understand how they aligned with their current company. Not just the job, but the future of the company, how they fit into helping it grow, and how they will grow as a member of the industry. If I could go back and advise those employers, I would tell them to stop asking those surface-level questions. You want someone reliable who can walk out of any situation with their head held high. Simple questions aren’t going to get that answer. You have to ask real questions, see how people react, and what their instincts tell them to do. That’s what a good interview does to you: it gets you thinking and wanting you to come back for another test, more prepared.

Your Truly,

Nate Smith
