Throughout my time applying for jobs in the construction industry and working jobs in college I have had my feet in everything from laboring for a small construction company, bucking hay, and my current position as a project engineer for a heavy civil construction company. My job experiences has been very valuable, as I was working for a construction company out of Woodland Washington named “Black Line”, summer of my junior year in college. I was working in an environment I truly loved and enjoyed, despite the 15 hour days and copious amounts of travel time. As I finished the summer out with this company I shortly after received a full time job opportunity from them to work as a superintendent managing my own crew. I was just reaching the point in my college career that I needed to start making decisions for my future. Around the same time I had an internship lined up to work for Knife River construction in Tumalo Oregon. I told myself and my previous employer that I would have a decision made after I have completed this internship. All said and done after my summer internship I found that I really like working for Knife River but not as much as I liked working for Black Line. Now I had to weigh my options, Knife River is a larger corporate heavy civil construction company offering full benefits, while Blackline was a mom and pop construction company not offering any benefits but still offering competitive wages. As I looked farther into each of my options I considered each company and where I had room to grow as an individual along with the benefit opportunities. In an end result I came down to those two factors, I found myself choosing Knife River for the fact that I had room to grown along with the ability to have full benefits and more employment opportunities.
