The Rewards of Preparing Training

Depending on the institution and provider, training and training requirements can change vastly. In my experience, the best training I have received, while not geared specifically toward me, has been tailored to people of my skill level. While in the military, this meant that everything followed what we referred to a “crawl, walk, run” format. As all people being trained came from various backgrounds and experience levels (new to the military and multiple deployments alike. This allowed all new enlistees to learn the basics of operations and folks with experience to gain remediation.

I have found this method to be continuously successful, especially in certain college courses. Certain courses I have taken, for instance Microeconomics taught at Chemeketa Community College. This course was tailored specifically for all with no experience. All topics introduced were taught as completely new subjects, and the material built upon itself offering both informative and hands-on sessions to the students. These topics were then steadily expanded upon and tied together. The instructor carefully articulated these lectures and learning materials to allow this and would regularly treat lectures as a discussion space to answer questions about the material, while still making sure the course made steady progress.

I would contrast this with my Macroeconomics course, taught at the same institution by another instructor. This was as hands off as can be. The “lectures” were in pdf format and were a list of bullet points pulled word for word from the book. These topics were rarely expanded upon to offer supplemental instruction and all hands-on material (homework) was also pulled directly from the text. This course was substantially more difficult to work through as you were essentially teaching yourself.

The material prepared and formulated well in advance allowed for easy growth and learning. This shows that if a course or training is well prepared and tailored for a specific audience, the audience can successfully learn and master material.
