Week 10 – Blog Post: Most Important Thing You’ve Learned

This course overall has taught me so many new and valuable things in employee recruitment and selection. The most important thing that I have learned in this class is negotiation. I personally have applied to a few jobs and have gotten some interviews. In the positions offered, I often question whether what the position is offering is truly worth it or if it reflects my skills, qualifications, and experience. The important step in starting this process is knowing the job and organization before applying. This step is crucial for an applicant to know and be aware of both, as this can help one explain how they can bring something vital and different to the table, and how their potential in the role and company.

It is important to remember one’s potential and where they are lacking. Knowing oneself can be beneficial as one can prepare how they will prove themselves fit for a position where they may be lacking a certain skill, qualification, or experience. Knowing one’s potential can help them truly sell themselves when applying for a position, and not sell themselves short of their true potential.

It is also important to know about the salary of the position one is applying for and the salary of similar positions. One can do this by simply looking up the salary of the position or a similar field online or asking others in the field. One should also research the company’s financial state and its salary range. Knowing such information can allow one to have a better understanding of the salary range and how much they should negotiate during the process.

Additionally, it is important to know what one wants to achieve and when it is time to walk away in numbers. Be prepared and already have a plan. It is important to consider the other benefits and negotiate them; don’t just look at the numbers, but consider pay, leave, and opportunities for advancement. Lastly, it is essential to practice so that one is prepared when negotiating to receive what one wants to achieve!
