Week 9 – Blog Post: Self-Reflection

1. What am I good at?

I am good at paying attention to detail in my work and others, work well under strenuous deadlines, efficient and effective in independent work, and good at offering help and support to others. Whether it be assignments or work, I have been able to recognize critical facts, points, or errors that can affect my quality of work, others, or negatively reflect on my work company. When under tight deadlines, I have been able to deliver work that is not only timely but also demonstrates a high level of quality. Independent work is a strong suit of mine as I thrive in an independent environment; despite such, I am efficient in assisting others and supporting them during difficult times at work.

2. What do I value?

I value being kind and respectful, even if the same behavior is not reciprocated, and being honest and true in my work. When making a mistake in my work, I believe it is vital to own up one’s mistakes but to also learn from them. I value being with friends and family, and being around good company can help with stressors in life, whether it be personal, academic, or work-related. I value good company and being respectful and honest at all times, as it can bring important life lessons, so one can improve and grow.

3. How did I get here?

I got here by being moved to help the underserved people in my community, but also by having an interest in local human resources. This pushed me to pursue a degree in psychology, but also to pursue a minor in human resources management. I got here by dedicating my time to my academics and selecting OSU due to its excellent academics. Additionally, I got here due to the support I have from family and friends, and the support I have received academically from counselors and professors.

4. Where am I going?

With my current actions, decisions, and path, I am going to complete my degree in the fall and work in social services or case management. I am going to learn and gain much more valuable information applicable to my career goals. Gaining experience in my new work can help me as I apply to graduate programs in social work or clinical mental health counseling. I am going to find a program that best suits my career goals and complete the program to help advocate and assist underserved populations in my local community.

Week 7 – Blog Post: IPIP Results & Reactions

I took the Classical Enneagram Test. Based on my test results, it describes that I have little extraversion. The test shared that I am a person who is more to myself and overall prefers to work alone. Something that the test brought out is that while I may not be very extraverted, I am somewhat willing to engage and interact with others when needed. Regarding agreeableness, the test brought out that I am very agreeable and perhaps can be a bit too agreeable. I often go with the flow of what others are leaning on. But the test brought out that while I am very agreeable, if a situation or concern arises where I may strongly disagree, I will stand my ground. The results overall shared that I work well with others and am cooperative. Regarding conscientiousness, the results shared that I am very conscientious in my work. I am a perfectionist, organized, responsible, disciplined, and strive to reach my goals. The test also shared that I am very aware of my work and the quality that I am delivering. Regarding neuroticism, the test results revealed that I am a person who often feels negative emotions daily and even during some stressful situations. Based on the results, I often doubt myself and feel anxious. Regarding openness to exercise, the test results shared that I often do not try or want to experience new things. The results revealed that I often stick to what I know and like.

Based on the results, a potential employee can recognize both my strengths and weaknesses as a potential employee. Some strengths that potential employers can see based on these results are my agreeableness and conscientiousness. Potential employers can see that I am cooperative and work well with a team. Potential employers can see that I can work in harmony with others by being very agreeable. Potential employers can also see that I am detail-oriented in my work. I pay close attention to small details, am disciplined to get work done effectively and efficiently, organized with my work, and goal-oriented. Additionally, my introversion can be seen as a strength as I can work efficiently and effectively by myself, but I can also work in a group when required or needed. Despite the results revealing that I go with the flow and am introverted, it shows my loyalty, dedication, integrity, and confidence that I have in my work to succeed and help reach organizational goals.

A potential employer can also recognize some weaknesses. Some weaknesses are low extraversion, openness to experience, and a tendency to have more negative emotions, such as self-doubt and anxiety. Low extraversion and low openness to experience can be seen as weaknesses, as I often stick to what I know and like, which can limit what new skills or ideas I can offer to the team and organization. I could potentially hold back my team or the progression of the organization to reach its goals. Additionally, the tendency to lean on negative emotions can be viewed as weakness, as they may believe I do not perform well under pressure or that I cannot handle and care for serious and challenging situations.

Overall, my results can bring to light both strengths and weaknesses that could influence a potential employer’s decision on hiring me as a potential employee.

Week 5 – Blog Post: Typical vs. Maximal Performance

If I were in the shoes of the business owner and had to choose which person I would hire, I would choose Jamie. Avery does offer great qualities, such as high performance, but a major disadvantage to selecting Avery is the lack of consistency. With having to fill an essential opening in a company, I would need someone to be there consistently and be there for others to ask questions or to help others. Avery being able to have a high performance inconsistently will not build a solid foundation for the company and other employees. Choosing Jamie will provide consistency. Though Jamie does not go above and beyond, they consistently offer pretty good results. This can assist the company to have a person in an essential position with consistency to offer help and support for all.

A job that would be better suited to hire someone like Avery than Jamie is a job that is perhaps jobs that are more challenging and has a greater reward at the end, like sales. A job like this can better suit Avery because she is a high performer, but needs that push for consistency. A job that challenges, has risk, and offers something rewarding at the end can allow Avery to display her high performance. This job would make Avery more valuable than Jamie because Avery can perform above and beyond; a high-stakes job needs one who does more than the bare minimum. Jamie’s “pretty good performance” will not suffice in a challenging, time-critical job.

A job that would better suit Jamie is a job that has a routine and stability, like a manager who oversees daily operations. This would suit Jamie because it offers consistency. Jamie will know how to perform their day-to-day job and be able to perform “pretty good” without having to push themselves to the limit every day. While there may be challenges, Jamie can learn the job inside and out with their consistency and good performance. Jamie would be more valuable to this job because it requires and needs consistency of good performance. Without the consistency of good performance of Jamie, operations can fall apart and get out of hand, overall disrupting business operations.
