Week 4 – Blog Post: Critiquing a Recruitment Ad 

My brand as a potential employee would be an independent and efficient individual who is passionate and motivated to work in the desired position. My strengths are being able to work efficiently and effectively during crises. Another strength of mine is being able to adapt to changes that may occur unexpectedly. Additionally, I am able to learn new rules or applications. A weakness of mine is not being confident in public speaking, and not being able to ask for help when needed. While these are weaknesses of mine, I have been able to practice my public speaking by doing more presentations. This has helped build my confidence, which has also assisted me with being more comfortable asking for help. Something that makes me unique is the experience that I bring to the job and how my experience in the field can allow me to better understand and connect to clients.

If I had to present myself in a novel, I would present myself as a person who is somewhat timid, but once you get to know me, others can see that I am dedicated and efficient in my work and strive to do my best every day. While I am more of a reserved person, I work well and enjoy collaborating with others to reach goals and figure out solutions that would help clients. I had to present myself in a creative situation like a wanted ad; if necessary, I would be in an ad that promotes more independent work. In a creative situation of a wanted ad, it would be something like a wanted ad for a librarian. A librarian’s job is mainly independent and sometimes involves working with others to find material for certain projects. A librarian must be passionate about the field to have a deep understanding of different genres, topics, and books. This job ad aligns with my brand as I prefer independent work, and when applying to a job, I am usually passionate about the task and what the job involves. The headline for the ad would be something like “Want to get lost in a world of books, researching, and being left alone with a different world? This librarian position consists of reading, researching, organizing, and collaborating with others in the world of books. This position might be in your next chapter.”

Week 3 – Job Descriptions

Thinking back to the last job I had, much of the job description influenced my decision to apply for the position. The job description that was provided when applying for the position seemed aligned with what I wanted to do and my goals. With my experience on the job, I believe it did not completely match the job description or job posting. I would say my experience and the job description matched around 70%. The last job I applied for was a behavior technician.

With my experience and with the job description, it did were some similarities. Some similar aspects of my experience and the job description consist of working with children who have autism or developmental disorders. Another similarity is applying ABA methods and practices during sessions with the children. These aspects of the job description did align with my experience. I practiced ABA methods and applied them during sessions with the children.

The differences between my experience and the job description are that the job description greatly emphasized the idea of working as a team to hold the child. This was a major difference between my experience and the job description. Throughout the application process and in the job description and job posting, it is continuously mentioned that this role includes lots of teamwork and communication with the case manager, other behavior technicians, and other professionals. Throughout my time, I rarely experienced communication and collaboration with anyone, even when I had questions or concerns. This job requires continuous and regular communication for the benefit of the client, but without having a team to work with, this made the job far more difficult and draining.

While I do not have a copy of the job description, it is somewhat similar to other job descriptions for this role.

Week 2 – Experiences with Discrimination

If my favorite company were faced with a public lawsuit where they were accused of widespread discrimination, this would most definitely affect the way I felt about the company. The outstanding claim of discrimination would change the way I felt about the company because I would not want to support a company that allows discrimination. The discrimination claim would influence my decision to support the company by no longer buying or visiting. A company that has claims of discrimination is not honorable. Many companies often mention that they do not discriminate against their employees or their customers. A company that goes against its words is a company that can also take advantage of its customers. A company should be honorable in its words to help establish trust with its customers to keep them coming back. 

The claim of discrimination would change if I were to apply to work for that company in the future. It would change my decision to apply to the company because I would not want to be in a work environment where discrimination is acceptable and seen as normal to do or display. One needs to do their research on the company they are applying a position to. A company that is associated with unethical claims can reflect how one will be treated in the workforce. I would not want to have to worry if I am going to see discrimination occur in the workplace or if someone is going to discriminate against me. A work environment should be free from discrimination; discrimination should not be displayed in society, so why should it be acceptable to display in the workplace? Overall, the claim of widespread discrimination would heavily influence my view and opinion of the company, and whether I would apply to work there.

Week 1 – The Case for Recruitment & Selection

The mini-lecture provides a claim that recruitment and selection are a company’s most important functions. While recruitment and selection are important functions it may not be entirely the most important. Organizations may decide to put their money elsewhere, other than employee recruitment and selection, to benefit the company in several ways. Organizations may decide to allocate more resources toward marketing or product design, rather than using those same resources to do a really good job in employee recruitment and selection can assist the companies by helping them form a unique and stand-out product design. This can also help the company reach its marketing goals by allocating funds to invest in quality, effective, and efficient product designs. This can help the company compete and get ahead of its competitors. Companies can be recgonized by their unique and quality products or design. This can help the company now but also in the future. 

Some potential strengths of an organization’s decision not to prioritize recruitment and selection in favor of a focus on other aspects of the business are financial gain and growth. The company’s financial growth and gains can lead to many others recognizing their company or products. The financial gain can assist the company to improve in more areas or branches of their company. While the financial gain may be more desirable it can have its drawbacks as it can be temporary and not long-term. A weakness of an organization’s decision not to prioritize recruitment and selection in favor of a focus on other aspects of business is having inadequate employees, low engagement, and low growth among employees. This can lead to a series of serious problems within the company which can affect the company’s growth and its progress to reach the organizational goals.

Week 1 – Job Application Experiences

In the last job that I applied for, the application process was seamless and enjoyable. In the last job that I applied for, I was able to apply through the company’s website. The company’s website provided an exceptional summary of the company and the job position itself. The questions the application asked were all applicable to the position and allowed applicants to demonstrate or share their knowledge and experience. Once done with submitting the application, I was then contacted by an employee of the company a day later. The interview process was also seamless and easy to follow through. The interviewer asked insightful questions, provided detailed information about the position, shared the company’s goals, and overall shared how I would make a great employee at their company. While nerve-wrecking applying to a job, the company assured me that I was well prepared for any questions they may have had and would excel in the workplace. 

My experience during the job application process shaped my impression of the job I was applying for. The application process made me feel confident in the decision I was making to apply and commit to the job and company. I took notice of the efficient and effective communication between me and the company’s employees. I wanted to be part of a company that supported its workers and that wanted them to excel in their work in the company. The job application process also shaped my impression of the job because I appreciated that the company asked insightful questions to ensure that their future employees not only had the proper credentials but also had the proper knowledge and critical thinking skills. This gave me assurance that the company valued their applicants’ ability to apply their education accurately and effectively, and not just be satisfied with seeing the credentials in the resume. Overall, my application process positively shaped my impression of the job I was applying for.
