Typical vs Maximal Performance

This week, we are asked to discuss our decision chosen in a scenario provided in class. The choice is between to potential employees, Avery and Jaime.

Firstly, I think it’s important to consider the job position as well as the number of employees you have at the company. For example, if this is a target and you’re hiring for a basic position, then Jaime is the clear option. However, if this is a small company of highly skilled projects, then I would choose Avery every time. Avery has the potential for greatness, as long as their is pressure applied to them and a strong supervisor. They may be considered a slacker on an average day, but that means they need a person to stimulate their potential or a real concrete goal to work towards. Incentivizing them becomes key, and the way they are managed will change everything.

The question is, will Avery be worth this extra attention? That’s why I said that the company size as well as job type is incredibly important. It certainly would not be worth the additional effort when you are just a standard worker at target. However, incredibly important issues such as a negotiation between manufacturers it would certainly be the right option. This is because at high level jobs, Avery’s performance is as of the utmost importance. It also will provide a level of urgency and stress that will push Avery to do better instead of slacking off, thus reducing the level of “push” that is required by management.

Overall, Avery is a great option if the job importance / management ratio is right. They require constant pressure to realize their potential, but I believe in it.
