Best Privacy-Conscious Browsers for 2023

In the modern age, we all should be concerned about our privacy. When you spend so much time on the internet, what is the safest way to go about browsing? These are my top-safest browsers for 2023!

Freenet

Freenet Browser Logo

Freenet is the best choice if you’re worried about censorship, since they use a “decentralized network and encryption to keep and deliver browsing data” (NordVPN). They also support OpenNet and Darknet connections.

However, with Freenet, you can only visit “Freesites” that are hosted on their network, which is limited due to bandwidth. This is a good option for advanced users, though.

My rating: 3/5

Mozilla Firefox

Firefox Browser Logo

Firefox has been around for a while! Produced by Mozilla, this browser offers enhanced tracking protection, focus options, and they don’t profit from online ads. However, the browser needs a bit of customizing to maximize its privacy features.

My rating: 4/5

Waterfox

Waterfox, Free Web Browser

Firefox has been around for a while, and Waterfox took advantage of their open-source code. Waterfox is upgraded to 64-bit Windows from Firefox’s 32-bit version, and comes privacy-oriented as a default, while Firefox does not.

My rating: 5/5

Puffin

Puffin Browser Logo

Puffin is a private browser that put in the extra work to earn their reputation! Unlike most browsers that render code for webpages provided to them, Puffin uses their cloud space to render the webpage, meaning your computer never receives code directly from the website’s servers.

My rating 5/5

Brave

Brave Browser Logo

Brave is a chromium-based browser that blocks third-party ad trackers and cookies. The browser is fast, nice to look at, and comes privacy-focused by default. Brave also offers browsing through TOR if you’re okay with taking some performance hits. Additionally, Brave was ranked “most private browser” by Douglas J. Leith at Trinity College!

My rating: 5/5

Overall, there are many great browsers to choose from, but for simplicity, usability, and out-of-the-box safety features, these are my top picks!
