MGMT 453: Week 1 Blog

Human Resources Management:

I decided to review 3 different companies that were all in the fortune 100 best companies to work for. I analyzed the Cheesecake Factory(12), American Express(9), and CarMax(20). One thing in particular that stood out to me is the tenure time that people were at the companies as well as the employee satisfaction rating for each company. These are both very important HR values that HR strives to improve, and it seems that each of the respective companies is doing a great job keeping employees satisfies to keep them in the company long term. For Example, the Cheesecake Factory had an 84% satisfactory rating which is a positive sign towards great HR management.

I aspire to be a great leader and manager in my career as I hope to eventually be a project manager on a commercial construction site. My goal is to be an evidence based manager and to rely on facts and satistics while also being efficient in people relations. Since I will be starting as a project engineer, I will learn the day to day functions of how a job site is run from a General Contractors perspective and will use this knowledge to help me become a better manager one day. I think the most challenging aspect of being a manager is satisfying everyones wants and needs because at the end of the day not every decision will benefit everyone. It will be tough making hard decisions and I hope to have enough previous knowledge on the matter to come to a conclusion that best fits the company who I work for. I also think that it will be difficult to manage a lot of employees, as a project manager I will be managing hundreds of employees on a site which could be overwhelming at times. This is something that I have identified early on and I hope to concur in my professional career.
