Job Application Experiences

The last job that I applied for would be a Peer Advisor for the College of Business. My experiences from the perspective of an applicant for the last job for which I applied would include finding out that the position was available, applying online, and going through the interviewing process.

Reading through what the position required and what their expectations were for me, shaped my impression of the job and my desire to work thereby providing me with insight into the professionalism and seriousness that the position would hold of me. I hadn’t worked in a professional setting before and I was nervous to start, I needed to make sure I can meet their standards while working for the College of Business. The interviewing process shaped my impression of the job by showing me the support my supervisors and the advisors we’d be working closely with will provide with the job. It allowed me to know that the job was not a “survival of the fittest” environment but a collaborative and team-oriented environment. The questions asked by my supervisors gave me a glimpse into what I can expect during a day in the position. That shaped my impression and desire for the job by giving me hints or help on what I am to learn and handle as I conduct the job. These experiences also allowed me to step out of my comfort zone and trust that I can live up to what they expect of me. For example, I understood we were to assist the students by ensuring we know about FERPA and keep their information confidential. I had to make sure I can maintain that throughout the job and ensure I can help and provide accurate information to the students.

    Hello Kiana,

It can be both nerve-racking and exciting to learn about what a position expects of you and to discover what this looks like in practice. From the sounds of things, the College of Business of Staff seemed to know what they were doing and how to introduce interviewees to the role. Effective hiring managers know what they are hiring for and have confidence in their abilities. This allows them to thoroughly vet applicants and make sure they can operate effectively in the position. Thanks for sharing this experience!
