Blog #2

Welcome to my second blog post for the Capstone course at OSU! I got placed on the project that I chose as my first choice, so I’m very happy about that! The project I was put in is for a Pet Adoption Dating App.

I’m imagining something very similar to the modern dating apps today such as Tinder and Hinge where you swipe right or left when you either like or dislike an animal that comes up on the screen. Each animal will have a page that has descriptions about:

  • Breed
  • Background story
  • Age
  • Name
  • Favorite activities
  • What scares them
  • Favorite treats
  • Description of what type of owner/family would be best suited for the animal

Since the animal can’t really match with a human, we can just have a page that holds a users ‘saved’ animals where they can keep a folder of the animals that they have favorited and want to revisit later. It will also be important to have a feature that shows whether or not the animal has been adopted, so that they can be removed from the adoption app.

I am currently also taking Mobile Development as my elective course, where we use Dart and Flutter to build cross platform mobile apps. I think that this particular dating app for animal adoption would be well suited to a mobile app. I’m not sure how my other team members would feel about using Dart/Flutter for this project, but I’m also very open to learning native mobile technologies or even building a web app!

I do have some experience using Swift/Xcode from about 3 years ago, and I know that the way native iOS apps are built has changed slightly. Now there is SwiftUI, which is closer to the way Flutter is used. I like the idea of using Flutter since we can build it once, and then have it for both Android and iOS. If our app becomes fairly fleshed out and works properly, it would be super cool to be able to post it to the Google Play Store and the App Store on iOS to see if people would use it.

I was very excited to choose the Adoption Dating app because 2 years ago, I adopted a rescue dog named Bambi who came from an abusive owner previously. When I first got Bambi, she was in pretty bad shape and her health was not the greatest but with time and some medicine, she is finally much more healthy and her fur has completely regrown back which is amazing!

This is Bambi! She is a Chihuahua Terrier mix!

I know that a lot of people who want dogs, always immediately go for pure breed dogs, and dogs that come from specific breeders, but there are so many poor animals in shelters that want to go to good homes, but get put down if they are at the shelter for too long, or if they get too old.

I will probably be spending the rest of the weekend thinking about how our team can go about building an Adoption Dating App. I am really excited to get started on this project, and I hope my team members are as well!
