There’s no doubt that hiring the right people is important, but is it really the most important thing a company does? I find it hard to argue that it is the most important. Some companies choose to put their resources into other areas, like marketing or product design, because, at the end of the day, if you don’t have a strong product or a good brand awarness, good employees won’t be enough to keep the business running profitable, or let alone at all.
Marketing is a huge priority for companies that want to push their product out to more people and increase demand. If no one knows about your business, it doesn’t matter how great your team is, there will not be anyone coming into your store or looking up your brand online. On the other hand, some companies focus more on product design, making sure they create something so good that customers will buy it on their own. These companies might assume that if they build a strong product/service, talented employees will just want to work there anyway regardless of investments into recruitment.
Of course, not prioritizing recruitment and selection comes with risks. High turnover and bad hires can cause a lot of long-term issues. But some businesses don’t worry about this too much, maybe they’ve never had a bad hiring experience before, or they believe they can fix those problems later if they come up. An example of this that i could think of hypothetically could be a small software company that doesn’t need to hire a lot of people. If their product is strong enough, they might not feel the need to invest heavily in recruitment because their success is driven by the software itself, not necessarily by a huge team of employees. So to tell a company like that this to invest into their recruitment instead of product development could be a insult to their organization.
At the end of the day, every company has to decide where to put their resources. While hiring great people is obviously important, it’s not always the top priority for every business—especially if they believe their product or marketing strategy will drive success on its own, and keep customers happy.
