The Influence of Job Descriptions

I would say since I’ve been in College, the job description was never really that important as I’ve really only worked summer Jobs since I started attending Oregon State. I’m sure there are a lot of students who have the same experience as me. It’s more about just making money every summer for the next upcoming year, instead of finding a job with a description that seems most appealing for me.

I’ve essentially worked summer maintenance positions the last four summers. Of course, I read the job description but anyone working summer maintenance knows that it’s all generally going to be the same. But in these last four summers I have worked for two separate companies and even though the job title was the same, the work did differ in some areas. I would say that the experience on the job matched the job description pretty well. Since it’s just a summer position the description was fairly broad because there is essentially a lot of different things that summer workers do. It was pretty similar in the fact that every task listed such as weed whacking, painting, raking, weed pulling were all tasks listed as “but not limited to” so it also let us know that we could be doing random tasks that happen to be presented that day. The only reason that it was different was because I was a returning employee who built very good connections with the employees there. Because of this, I ended up getting some tasks such as delivery driving where there was a bit more responsibility because they trusted me.
