Job Descriptions – Why Are They Important?

By Ryan Lovdahl

When I was able to begin working, I looked for jobs at multiple places, these jobs, most of the time, had job descriptions attached to the job title when you would be on their websites or even their posts on websites like Indeed, when they were hiring. What would reel me in to apply for a job would definitely be the description, I would read about the daily tasks and responsibilities I would have if I was hired after I decided to apply and interview for that job.

This is the first reason for why job descriptions are so important, reeling in new employees and letting them know what they will be getting into if they want to apply for the job. If there is no or little job description, many candidates will be turned away just because there is no information on the job and there will be no interest. Think about it, would you apply for a job that you understand more about the day to day tasks and responsibilities, or apply to a job based on the job title? I think most people would like to know what they are potentially diving into before they apply.

Another reason job description is so important to get right is if an employee goes through the application process and gets hired by a company, they already have somewhat of an understanding of what they will be doing day to day. If their position is a forklift operator for example, they might feel confused or even frustrated if they are asked to be a cashier or shovel dirt outside. While I have been an employee at a few places, I have heard people say things like “that is not part of my job” and this can be very avoidable if the employer becomes much more specific with their employees with job description.
