3rd Blog

Hello, In this third blog I wanted to talk about applying for jobs and resumes. I feel as though there is a huge difference between today’s application process versus what it was 20 years ago, maybe even 10 years ago. As ATS is pretty much a standard now, resumes aren’t really being read by people at all ever anymore, but by these system scanners. If you didn’t know, ATS is an applicant tracking system that let organizations sift through candidates quicker during the hiring process based on the information the system collects versus what the organization needs for a specific position. Unless it’s a very small company, no one really reads resumes anymore until probably the in-person interviews. Another thing to note when applying is what site to use. There are so many job sites that either repost old jobs, or job postings that are scams that pretend to be employers. These are some of the few things that I’ve noticed during my short time applying.

I never actually received any internships in software development and was rejected for basically everything from IT intern, data analyst, and even part-time school IT work. The market is really good for technical positions but I feel as though the application process is very flawed, or perhaps difficult to showcase your skills just through a resume and a GitHub as everyone has one nowadays. I was fortunate enough to get work experience at a startup. I know a lot of people want to work at a large corporation as it has connotations of being easier or better pay/benefits but if you cannot find a job, definitely look for start-ups that aren’t well known. The pay is probably a bit lower but it will boost your resume even if you’re there for only 6mo or 1yr. I was fortunate to get a position at a startup that was struggling to find talent and I feel like start-ups are more willing to take chances on employees and bypass the typical corporate screening process that takes months to go through at times.
