I analyzed thee 2020 Fortune Best Companies to Work For and I selected three companies that I am familiar with to research. The research that I was conducting was about the environment that the companies have for employees and the overall culture of the companies. The companies that I chose to research were American Express, USAA, and Experian. Some of the Positive aspects of the work environment that employees of the companies listed above included culture, opportunities, and work-life balance. For USAA in particular sources show that USAA is working on employee development. (USAA, 2021) This means that the company is striving and working towards opening more opportunities up for employees. Opportunities for employees is important because talent needs to be moving up and new managers need to be constantly made as old ones move up and out of the picture. This is supported by Harvard Business Review’s article: How Google Sold It’s Engineers on Management, where David Garvin states that a good manager helps with career development. (Garvin, 2013)
As a manager I would intend to be firm but fair. I believe that a manager needs to be trusted and respected by their subordinates so I would put effort into leading by example and practicing the same principles expected out of subordinates. The most challenging aspect of being a manager for me would be holding subordinates that I might happen to be friends with to the same standard as everyone else. I have spent some time being in a manager position at work and I have found this to be the most challenging aspect of the job. I have no trouble being firm with people that I am not friends with, but it can be difficult to hold my friends to the same standard.
