HR Management and Sucesfull Companies

One of the main things that I see over and over in the article “fortune 100 Best Companies to work for 2020” is that putting people first matters. The four companies I chose to look at were 1. Hilton, 2. Ultimate Software, 3. Wegmans Food Markets, and 4. Cisco. I chose these because why not go with the top 4 best companies if my goal is to find out the best way companies manage HR. In all 4 of those companies there is this underlying idea that individual workers are valued. Reading this article there are some quotes that stick out to me. “When management says they care about their people it actually shows in their actions.” – Cisco employees, or ” I have never felt more supported in my role or happier to come to work” – Ultimate Software employees. Both of these are examples of workers coming forward to say they best part about their job isn’t what they do. It’s how they are treated and are valued.

In my future career I hope to be in a project engineer and eventually own my own General Contracting company. Many times large corporations have designated HR specialists. However I believe it’s important for everyone especially in management positions to value these things. It’s a “lead by example” type of thing. If a boss of a company claims to have a welcoming work environment but is known for sexual harassment or racism, then that shows their lack of integrity and that people might be very put off by working for someone who has those tendencies. Whereas someone who actually believes in these ideas, although they aren’t their ” HR Rep”, they still show and exemplify the ideals that their company strives to obtain. This is good leadership and good implementation of HR. I hope to me a manager who is fair and welcoming to everyone. Someone people can trust and WANT to work for. You cant have these things without HR. However some challenges can arise from holding on to these values.

Many times doing the right thing isn’t easy, or can even be a “bad” business decision in terms of money. An example of this is if a manager of a car dealership had a salesman that was always rude and harassing other employees was the top salesman at the store, this could cause a hard decision to be made by the manager. One one hand you can fire the salesman because he is a toxic personality and is making a poor work environment for others. But on the other hand if you do fire this person, you could lose out on a lot of profit that he brings in with his sales. I think a way to make the best decision here is look at the long term effects of your decision. Sure you might make a few extra bucks by keeping him employees. But over time you will lose workers from them quitting and as a company your reputation will be ruined. This will lead to a bigger financial loss in the end. So it shows that by putting HR first, you are not only making a fair and safe work environment, but you are also maximizing profits long term.
