At my current workplace they offer two different bonus structures to motivate employees to pick up and work additional shifts. Keep in mind, I work in the healthcare industry and currently quality or efficiency is not the biggest hurdle at the moment, it is staffing.
The first bonus structure is one that is completed at the beginning of every month. It is a large lump some bonus that changes based on the number of shifts picked up. 5 Shifts= a bonus of ~500 dollars, 10 Shifts= a bonus of ~1250, 15 Shifts, a bonus of ~2000. This varies based on positions. This means at the end of the month your paycheck will include not only your regularly scheduled hours and pay, but any overtime you accrued and the bonus are also applied.
The second bonus structure can be combined with the first and is applied on a case by case basis. This typically happens on extra short shifts, in which house charges release a bonus for that shift only. Typically these bonuses are about $200-$275 for that single shift.
These bonus shifts have increased the rate of shift pickup within the facility and helped us to maintained safe and adequate staffing levels. These bonus compensation have increased morale and made employees feel more wanted and worthy because they are being paid more.
I know in previous work environments being asked to pick up extra shifts was never something people liked to do without incentive, and I think this is a more than fair incentive for employees. A pick up of a singular bonus shift can equal to more than the employee would make in that shift alone, which can nearly double their pay.
I think this has had a mostly positive affect on staff and patients but also has probably led to people overworking themselves, and border lining on burnout.
