I started my Fall Software Engineer Internship this week. It is at a local financial company doing backend engineering. Before this internship, I was unemployed for about a month and it was the longest one month of my life.
During my unemployment month, I finally got the rest I needed. I was able to watch all the tv shows I wanted and sleep when I felt sleepy. I went out every weekend to hang out with my friends for drinks. It felt good to have this freedom that I couldn’t enjoy previously. But, it didn’t last long.
Previously, I worked full-time as a data analyst for 2 years and worked as a software engineer intern during the summer. I never had to worry about financial responsibilities during those times because I had a steady source of income. However, after the summer internship ended, I started to get stressed whenever I looked at my bank statement.
Being unemployed is enjoyable due to the freedom but it also comes with a lot of stress and boredom. Worrying about not being able to pay my bills is a problem that follows with unemployment. Also, chilling at home is enjoyable for the first two weeks but you start getting bored and realize my time could be better utilized by gaining experience through an internship or working a part-time job. That’s why I started to look for a Fall Internship.
After about 20 applications and 1 interview, I was able to land a Fall Internship. It is exactly what I wanted, working with backend using Java. I’m pretty excited about this opportunity for the experience and knowledge I will gain. I will update about the internship on my next blog post.
