Typical vs. Maximal Performance

Being a business owner that is interested in hiring a new employee to fill and essential opening is never easy, after narrowing down the search to two prospects one being a high-performance ceiling but can be considered a slacker and another being a consistent solid performer with a much lower performance ceiling is a tough situation to face. I think it really depends on the role and the team that they are going to be apart of as to which individual I personally would hire. I think that I have great motivational skills and could potentially have the high performance ceiling employee step up day in and day out, but if I am not in charge of directly over seeing this individual on a daily basis I would have to side with consistency. I know what I am going to get out of them even when I am not around.

A high stress fast paced job I believe someone who has that high performance ceiling is better suited for. These are the type of people who tend to get bored at work easy and need excitement or constant work to perform at their best. The consistent performer who does not perform all that well under stress or in these conditions would not be ideal for this kind of position. The opposite is true for a job that requires consistency, I think these type of employees work best in a team and the team can count on them to always do their part and get results. The team can also be there as a backstop for this type of employee if a stressful situation ever does arise.
