OSU home football games now serve drinks in bottles and cans, which are then collected by Campus Recycling and hand-sorted by student staff. The large influx of materials prompted OSU Athletics to initiate a collaborative effort between the Beaver Athlete Sustainability Team (BAST) and Campus Recycling to help sort the recyclables after games.
BAST is a group of student-athletes committed to improving sustainability and environmental consciousness in athletics, on campus, and throughout the community. BAST hosts monthly meetings, community service projects, guest speakers, gear drives, and more. This organization contributes to developing solutions to environmental degradation and climate change, brings awareness to important topics in sustainability, and focuses on community empowerment.
Following home football games this season, a group of 15 BAST members spent approximately 4 hours sorting through containers of materials recycled by Beaver Fans, with support from Campus Recycling. After the first four games, BAST and Campus Recycling sorted 67% of all redeemable beverage containers – around 50,000 items! These efforts have helped secure $5,000 of funding toward the OSU Athletics Sustainability Fund. A huge thank you to these individuals!
