While bookwork in the classroom is the core of a college education, experiential learning outside of the classroom is also necessary to inspire students and truly prepare them for entering the workforce. It should be no surprise that many college graduates lack confidence as they transition from college to careers, because they have been working within the same framework for over a decade and all of a sudden they are being thrown into an entirely different experience. This is why experiential learning prior to graduation, such as studying or working abroad, is an invaluable component of a college education.

At first, Victoria Adams was terrified at the idea of travelling to Botswana to conduct public health research, because it was unlike anything she had ever done before. Ultimately, Victoria’s experience in Botswana changed her outlook, inspired her to pursue a career doing similar work, and dramatically increased her confidence. Upon reflection, she is glad that she pushed her comfort zone by doing something unfamiliar, because it resulted in considerable personal growth.
