The Sustainability Office has been reviving an old Ecologue series- highlighting Alumni who were involved with sustainability during their time at OSU. Meet Marshall Moses, a 2016 graduate in Graphic Design. As an employee of Lithia Motors, Inc., part of the Fortune 250, he has helped educate customers on the future of EVs (electric vehicles) and to provide a marketplace geared toward new tech and an electric future.

During his time at OSU:

Marshall originally bounced around a few different undergraduate programs before landing on graphic design, and he graduated with a BFA. He volunteered at the Boys and Girls Club in Corvallis, coaching elementary Track & Field, and he attended several American Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA) functions. An intern with the Sustainability Office, he was provided several opportunities to work with Brandon Trelstad on different projects and created graphics for the website, events, and digital media.

Since OSU:

He is currently on a non-traditional path to pursue full-stack web development through Altcademy, which he will complete this summer. He also plans to get certified in the coding languages he’s been learning through Altcademy and his work with Lithia Motors, Inc.

Working for an automotive retail company has really allowed Marshall to learn that influencing change through even small efforts can have a large impact. Although balancing work and practicing sustainability can be challenging in his line of work, he has been designing and developing solutions for Greencars.com, which has grown into a large resource for EV Education. He has also been designing communications for their internal Green Team, which has aligned efforts in the corporate offices to encourage sustainable practices. Marshall says, “In my current field specifically, I hope to see a greater adoption of EVs, as well as more utilization of vehicle sharing and public transport options. In my general field, I hope to continue to see companies offsetting website’s carbon emissions, and more inclusive design to allow everyone and anyone to share experiences and learn in the tech sphere.”

We are excited to hear about Marshall’s ongoing work and his pledge to improve sustainability where he can. We love to hear from our Alumni to learn more about what they’re doing outside of OSU – if you’re a former Sustainability Office employee or graduated in a related field, please contact us for a feature!

Oregon State University in Corvallis, Oregon, is located within the traditional homelands of the Mary’s River or Ampinefu Band of Kalapuya. Following the Willamette Valley Treaty of 1855, Kalapuya people were forcibly removed to reservations in Western Oregon. Today, living descendants of these people are a part of the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde Community of Oregon (grandronde.org) and the Confederated Tribes of the Siletz Indians (ctsi.nsn.us).
