This is the message that a group of student leaders, graduate students and professional faculty members interested in environmental sustainability and health promotion efforts want to send to the OSU community.

Recent funding from Pacific Source’s Healthy Life Challenge has been a catalyst for education/health promotion efforts and program incentives with the aim of increasing physical activity, encouraging healthy eating and decreasing smoking on the OSU campus. The group tentatively named the “Water Bottle Committee” is working on an education and incentive campaign to make tap water the #1 beverage choice for Beav’s. The vision is to make the practice of using water bottle woven into the identity of OSU because we care about our health and the health of the environment. The work of this committee is focused on three main areas:

1. Increasing access to reusable water bottles and filtered water at OSU
2. Working with major event organizers to make tap water the #1 choice
3. Educating and promoting the OSU community on the benefits of tap water (decreases waste, it is a healthy alternative to sugary beverages/energy drinks, etc)
The education campaign to promote tap water is (tentatively) planned to start Winter term. If you are interested in additional information or would like to participate in this effort, contact tara.sanders@oregonstate.edu.

  1. It’s great that people are starting to realize how much waste bottled water produces. It’s unfortunate that not all tap water is drinkable right out of the tap. In many places filtration or reverse osmosis is vital.

  2. There German government just published a study that water from bottles is polluting the environment 10 times more than tap water. I think finally citizens are waking up to renewable energy issues.
