Keep On Going

As we get closer to the end of the winter term there are some of us that are will be graduating. After graduation how many of us have already received offers or are in the middle of the recruitment process? Given the highly competitive industry, these are some of the things I have heard from recruiters as of 2023. As a side note, I find it interesting how recruiters emphasize different methods how applying depending on the economy.

I would say before the third quarter of 2022 and the current 2023 season I heard many recruiters talk about applying to as many positions that are available and doing as many as you can find. During these times the economy in most industries is doing pretty well and many sectors are looking for people with a computer science background to work for their companies. High demand is good for us as a growing need allows us to find jobs and give opportunities to those that are looking. In my opinion, we are able to have more options on where we want to work and grow our careers.

The other method that I am currently hearing more about is getting job opportunities through references. Usually, this means knowing someone in a company that would have a job opportunity and connecting with them to help you get your foot into the door for an interview and hopefully an offer. The most important I believe in this method is establishing relationships. Whether it is a classmate or a mentor in the field, maintaining and nurturing these relationships is important as they will help in the future. This would be one of the pieces of advice I would tell my younger self.

Concerns

Right now my main concern is experience level. I understand that most recruiters would like to have someone that has a few internships on their resumes. So what can a person do to supplement this? From the advice I received, work on projects. It does not matter how big or small the project is do something that can keep the skills up, maintain a foundation of a language, or learn a new language. Depending on how many projects you create put the most significant one you do on the resume to show. Start off small and gradually build, it is about the process, not just the destination.

Mental

Finally, there is the mental part as well. Knowing how to handle rejection, back performance, and picking yourself back up. It can be tough and depending on where someone is in their career, school, or family find someone that can help you act as a supporter. This is your journey and understanding the work and effort you have to go through to reach a goal will be a rewarding feeling. It would also help to write down items to accomplish and new goals to set to maintain mental focus oneself. This way we will not forget and travel horizontally instead of going vertically to reach our goals.
