Looking at this from the perspective of a business owner, let me just start by saying the business owner (the person at the top) should be the most dedicated person to the business. For this reason, I would choose Jaime over Avery 10 times out of 10 and it is directly related to the reason I gave above. Why would I choose to hire someone who can be stellar at what they do once in a blue moon when the decide to apply themselves but be a slacker most of the other times they are working? Although it doesn’t sound like Jaime has the occasional “clutch factor,” Jaime doesn’t need to. That’s the whole point of having people in higher positions who DO know how to better handle those situations when they arise. Because Jaime is someone who is known do be consistent and reliable with the work they do, this takes less day to day pressure off of me (the owner) and those in other positions above. Also, work ethic isn’t really something you can teach, but job specific skills and how to handle certain situations can be taught. This is why I believe Jaime is the better candidate by far.
To answer the second question, I believe the right career choice for someone like Avery who has a high ceiling but may not be the most consistent is something along the lines of marketing or social media related work. The reason I believe this is because while Avery may not be consistent at creating content that generates boat loads of people, Avery will have that occasional whale that goes viral or is a huge hit in terms of customer generation. Jaime although may be more consistent again, might not be able to create the massively popular ads or content that generate the same customers as Avery.
A job that would be fitting for Jaime considering the low potential but high consistency report would be something in sales. Although I would argue that for both the marketing and sales positions it would be better to have a highly consistent and high ceiling candidate, we are only working with these two. Anyways… Jaime would be good in a sales role because of the consistency they offer. Sales is about closing the deal, and if there’s someone who can consistently do that for a company then I definitely would want them on my team in that role.
