Do You Get Paid Enough For This?

Hi everyone! On this blog post we will be talking about compensation and the behaviors of employees around the topic. Now, some view compensation as something that should be high up front with consistent checks for evaluation, and some view it as something to work up to. We will be discussing both of these approaches and how it effects an employee’s behavior.

I do not agree with those who think that compensation should be great to start, I think that as an employer you want to give a fair wage to start, and then evaluate that employee over time and see if the work they have done justifies an increase in pay. I think this is the best way to go about the problem of compensation, if you set that compensation high to begin, it will give employees less to work toward, the bar will already be too high with no wiggle room. I am not saying to under pay employees, I think employees should be paid a fair wage but one that is the same as other businesses or competitors.

I do agree with those who think that better compensation is something you need to work towards. I agree with this because the approach and attitude of employees will be improved if they are receiving better compensation for their hard work (they will be working harder to achieve this). I personally have heard many coworkers jokingly and seriously say “I don’t get paid enough for this” when most of the time the task that they are doing is actually part of the job.

In the end, I think setting a fair wage to new employees while pushing them to their potential so that the business and the employee benefit from their hard work is the best approach to the compensation discussion. Giving someone something to work toward will help them work harder and if they do work harder they will be compensated, resulting in successes for both the business and employee.
