Hello world from Tel Aviv

I started my CS program at the beginning of the pandemic just outside Washington DC, when no commute and vanishingly rare social engagements freed up my nights and weekends.  After thousands of lines of code, moments of rage at uncooperative functions, 2 whiteboards delivered by Amazon, and just enough ‘aha’ moments, I find myself about to graduate with a 2nd bachelors degree, all while adjusting to life in a new country.  Having landed just 4 days ago, we’ve moved to Israel due to my partner’s job.

At first, this blog will focus on my last class: Oregon State’s Capstone for computer science.  I will also begin to cover my job search. Known as the “start-up nation”, tech jobs abound in Israel.  But how important is Hebrew fluency?  Dev experience? How much will AI change the industry here?

My immediate priority is starting off strong for my team’s capstone project.  I was drawn to the projects involving real companies and real problems.  My full-time job, young child, and programming side projects never left enough time for an internship during this program.  The Adventure Van Roof Rack Configurator stood out for being clearly defined beginning-to-end project and for for looking like fun.  Modeling the rack components in space along their interaction with other pieces of equipment will be an interesting challenge.  Whatever we create must seamlessly work with the company’s existing Shopify website and business processes.

My one real source of anxiety is the short amount of time for this project.  Thankfully, the whole team is excited about the Roof Rack project (better name pending, hopefully).  And now, it’s time to deal with that anxiety with hummus!
