Are you in need of a part-time job? OSU Disability Access Services (DAS) is looking to hire several new transcribers.

Real-Time Transcribing is an accommodation offered through DAS, which allows students access to a meaning-for-meaning written version of their lectures during class. Transcribers are hired on a part-time (up to 20 hours per week) basis. Because these are part-time positions, they are open for anyone, including OSU students.

Any applicants must be able to successfully complete Typewell Certification before they can begin transcribing classes. If you would like information about becoming a Typewell Transcriber, please visit http://support.typewell.com/customer/portal/articles/1292766-transcriber-faq. You can find additional information at http://typewell.com/for-transcribers/qualify-and-apply.

Any interested applicants should contact Barbara Forrest-Ball, Manager of Deaf & Hard of Hearing Services at DAS. She can be reached at Barbara.Forrest-Ball@oregonstate.edu or by calling 541-737-3670.

The Psychology of Disability, taught by Kathleen Bogart, will be available once again in Fall 2015.

This is an extremely popular course, and fills up quickly, so be sure to register soon!

Psychology of Disability

Psy 499/599

T/TH 12:00-1:50, Fall 2015

Professor Kathleen Bogart

Prerequisites: Upper division standing and Psy 202.

One out of five people have or will develop a disability in their lifetime, but we rarely think about society’s

underlying assumptions regarding this common human experience. This course will explore disability from social

psychological and disability studies perspectives. We will explore the social construction of disability and its inter-and

intra-personal rami cations. This course departs from traditional psychology courses that focus on impairments

within the individual and attempt to normalize people with disabilities. Instead, this class will explore how society’s

conception of disability is the main source of handicap.

Please contact Professor Bogart at Kathleen.bogart@oregonstate.edu if you would like more information about this course.

Several OSU students have come to our office requesting assistance with threatening IRS calls. Please read the letter below from OSU Public Safety and Human Resources for additional information about this phone scam, and please do not hesitate to contact the Department of Public Safety/Oregon State Police at 541-737-3010 with any concerns about these calls.

Dear Oregon State Students, Faculty and Staff,

It has come to our attention that a number of OSU students continue to be the targets of a phone scam. The students who have received these calls are told that they owe taxes to the Internal Revenue Service and must pay immediately or face consequences.  We have learned that other universities have reported the same scam, as well.  We suspect that callers may use printed student phone directories to make calls.

The scam begins when students receive a call that, according to their caller ID, is the Corvallis Police Department. The numbers that have been called from/referenced for call back are: (703) 565-2205 and (541) 766-6924, the latter of which is the direct line to Corvallis Dispatch.

Corvallis PD is aware of this scam and the inappropriate use of their phone number. The agency wants to ensure that OSU students or any others who may be the target of such a scam know that law enforcement:

  • Does not call citizens seeking payment for tax bills – either state or federal taxes. Nor does any other legitimate law enforcement agency.
  • Does not call individuals and demand money from citizens under any circumstances

Additionally, the Department of Public Safety warns that individuals claiming to collect debt may try to instill fear in potential victims to persuade them to forward money.

If you receive such a call, use the link below to report the call to the Oregon Department of Justice: https://justice.oregon.gov/consumercomplaints/

If you actually become a victim of such a scam, please report the incident as soon as possible to your local law enforcement agency such as your police department or county sheriff’s office. If you have further questions, please contact the OSU Department of Public Safety and OSU-Corvallis office of OSP by calling 541-737-3010.

Please share this important information with others you know to help ensure that as many people as possible are protected from illegal telephone fraud.
