Compensation Management

Over the last summer, I worked for the Portland Pickles Baseball Team as an Intern. This was an unpaid position but was arguably one of the best experiences of my life thus far. My main career goal is to work in the sports industry and over my years of research trying to get into this industry, the common theme is you have to work extremely hard to get into it and have lots of experience working in sports. Everyone wants a job in sports which is why it is so hard to get into it.

On the first day working for the Pickles the General Manager addressed the elephant in the room which was that even though we may not be getting paid there is so much more that is gained and given through this experience. What you get out of it is what you put into it. This really stuck with me and in the end, I completely understood what he meant. Even though it sucked not being paid for my work and effort, I still gain extremely valuable skills that have set me up well to get a job in the sports industry. In fact, the work I did that summer is the only reason I got the job working for the OSU Baseball Team as an Analytics and Video Intern. It just proves that some things are more valuable than monetary compensation.
