Wicking Bed Workshop

On Saturday, March 7th at 10:30 a.m., community members gathered at Curry Educational Greenhouse and Garden (CEGG) in Gold Beach to learn how to create a wicking garden bed. The hands-on workshop focused on building a self-watering raised bed that uses a bottom reservoir to supply water directly to plant roots.

Wicking beds offer many benefits for gardeners. They help save time and water, reduce the chances of fungus and insects often caused by overwatering, decrease the need for fertilizer, and support the growth of healthy, lush plants.

During the workshop, participants helped install a new wicking bed in one of the raised beds at CEGG. Volunteers worked together to move rocks, soil, and other materials into the bed, building the layered system that allows water to wick up from the reservoir below.

The event was a great success thanks to the enthusiastic participation of community members who came ready to work with gloves, sturdy shoes, and hats. Water and snacks were provided, and the collaborative effort resulted in a completed wicking bed that will serve as an educational feature in the Demonstration Garden.

Thank you to everyone who signed up and helped make the workshop a productive and enjoyable morning. The new wicking bed will continue to demonstrate sustainable gardening techniques for visitors and volunteers alike.
