The OSU Extension Service’s Monthly Garden Calendars were first published in December 2020 and reviewed in 2025. It’s also worth looking at the OSU Garden Future link. This is a project that is gathering information on the effects of a shifting climate, particularly as observed by Oregon gardeners. The calendar links below contain helpful tips for gardening, pest monitoring and management, and timing for spring plantings.
March is a good time to firm up gardening and planting plans for the coming spring and summer. If you have a vegetable garden, then cool season crops (onions, kale, lettuce and spinach) can be planted in March, given that the soil is consistently at or above 40 degrees. Although an additional consideration for Curry County is that heavy rains, and therefore wet soil, may delay soil preparation and planting. Very good reads specific to our area are Growing vegetables in the Pacific Northwest coastal region and The best vegetables to grow in Oregon’s coastal climate.
In April, be sure to cut back ornamental grasses, and prune, shape or thin spring-blooming shrubs and trees after blossoms fade. April is also a good time to manage weeds while they are small, actively growing, have not yet seeded, and are easier to remove. Also, monitoring your garden for fertilizer needs and pests now, early in the growing season, can catch developing problems. Many specific suggestions on this topic are given in the April link below.
